Day 5 - at the supermarket

Teaching today was animals and games. I met Lai, my new 'head' assistant, who was very nice. I get another one tomorrow! I also managed the bus and road crossings entirely on my own. Phew. Discovered the school is right opposite the American embassy. Also saw dog cooking on way into work, roast dog for breakfast anyone?  And the Lycée on Nia Truc.

It was better teaching today, getting them colouring in their favourite animal was a moments break for all concerned. The problem seems to be that their parents expectations are of flowing conversation, while the kids are actually tiny and are finding even saying their names out loud to be tough.  The teaching assistants came up with some good ideas, including 'slap the board' which was great fun. Finished up with a rendering of 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes' which I am very bad at!

The other problem is simply no resources. I had to push for paper today, and colouring crayons were specially bought! I also had to carry it all home with me for future use. Asked for permission to use a larger space for games too.q

This afternoon went to Doi Can Lane for sticking plasters for my blisters, and later to discover the Favimart - supermarket - which is a proper supermarket. Hanoi is more exciting at night , with the trees (black locust) leaning over the roads, and the alley houses full of fridges and TVs - in some parts, some don't have tables or chairs, while some have ornate Thai style wooden chairs which they sit in to watch TV. Several crèches in the area, if you need one?

Exhausted. Going to sleep now. 9pm.
